Have you heard of the Earth Charter?

We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognise that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.

The Charter was published at the turning of the Millennium, in the year 2000, having arisen out of the RIO Earth Summit in 1992. It is as relevant today as it was 26 years ago.

To me it’s more than just an international policy statement, it is a work of art, full of great sentiment and vision, and addressing all life on Earth

The Charter invites us to connect with sixteen fundamental principles, to which we may all aspire – it offers positive statements and hope in a negative world with fragile ecosystems.

My vision is for everyone to have read the Charter.

Initially, I intend to gather some 30 people to read the Charter aloud, each taking turns to share a part, and perform at a festival next year, or at least as a video/podcast and potentially even set to music.
